3 things first-time homebuyers should know right now
There’s nothing like buying a home – especially if it’s the first one. No matter how much you prepare your clients for the journey, there will be a few surprises along the way. As this 2022 article shows, even people who think they know how it all works end up learning something.
Here are a few things buyers, especially those who are going through it for the first time, may need to hear from our fellow real estate professionals.
What exactly is happening where they want to live
All real estate is local. Listen, everyone who pays even an ounce of attention knows the market has changed over the last couple of years, but only people who work in it every day understand what’s happening – and not happening – in a specific location. Be open and honest with your clients, and push back against myths and ideas that don’t apply to their specific search.
It’s going to get emotional.
There are many twists and turns in the homebuying process. It’s important to manage your client’s expectations and prepare them for this emotional rollercoaster. Hiccups happen and they may find more bumps along the way, but they’ll be prepared if you teach them what to expect.
It’s going to get stressful.
Even the most prepared first-time buyers, and their agents, should be ready for some stress. It’s a long process, no matter how smooth the transaction is. We all know that, but your buyers may not. Push them to be open and honest about their feelings – and let us know when a client may need extra care. Encourage nervous buyers to reach out to family and friends to vent about the journey, too, and remind them they have a whole team working to get them into their first home.
