Maybe it’s because we had so much fun celebrating National Dog Day last month, but we’ve been thinking a lot about pets and the joy a furry animal can bring into our lives. With that in mind, we wanted to make sure we talked about how important of a role pets play in the modern home search.

You may have heard this before, but a 2020 survey found that more than 40 percent of households would be willing to move to better accommodate a pet. Talk about being a member of the family.

Here are several more figures that show how important man’s best friend (and other types of animals) can be when listing a home:

  • Nearly half of homebuyers say a fenced-in yard is a desired attribute. (In fact, homes with such a yard sold five days quicker on average.)
  • A Zillow study found that 84 percent of dog owners would pay more for a home with more dog-friendly features.
  • 75% of millennials say they would pass on a home, no matter how good it is, if it didn’t meet the needs of their pets.
  • In two 2021 surveys, about 20 percent of respondents said they would bring their pet to a house showing, and that same amount said they had passed on home for a pet-related reason.

Our main takeaways from these findings? It’s important for our Realtor friends to keep highlighting pet-friendly features in your listings – and that goes beyond the home, too. If there’s a dog park nearby, it’s probably worth mentioning, for example. On the other side of things, it’s safe to assume if your buyers have pets, those animals will play a role in their final selection – even if they haven’t told you that yet.
